ANGEL Tip: Dropping the Lowest Grade

In the ANGEL Grade Book if you choose to drop the lowest grade, by using the “Drop Lowest” option for a Category, you may still want to see which grade was dropped (the ANGEL Grade Book does not show which grade was dropped). However, you can go to reports and run a report on a given student and the dropped items will appear in gray.

You may also wonder if a category is set to drop the lowest grade and there is an “extra credit” item in the category, will the extra credit item get dropped if it is lowest scored item? Or what if the extra credit item is not completed by the student? You would not expect extra credit items to be dropped and that is how ANGEL behaves. The extra credit item is not dropped.

I am still having trouble with "Extra Credit". My students who have completed the extra credit have a lower percent average after they complete the extra credit!

Any advice?

Caroline - there are several things you can check. Is this an extra credit ASSIGNMENT in a regular category, or is it an assignment inside an extra credit CATEGORY? Either way is fine, but you need to make sure you did NOT do both.

Also, check to be sure that you have assigned a point value for the extra credit assignment. This seems backwards, but it's not. For instance, if you put in 10 points as the maximum number of extra credit points for that assignment, ANGEL will record it as 10/0 (ten out of zero), which is as it should be for extra credit.

If neither of these options work, we need to back up and look at how you have your grade book set up, and verify that you chose points versus percentage correctly, that if using percentage you have your categories weighted correctly, etc.
